About this novena

This is an original nine-day devotional adaptation written for Prayers & Reflections, not an official liturgical text or a reproduction of a particular shrine’s novena. Each day offers a distinct intention and a practical response of faith. Novenas invite persevering prayer and do not guarantee a particular result. Simbang Gabi is a Filipino series of nine Masses preparing for Christmas. This devotional companion supports personal or community prayer; it does not replace the Mass or supply its liturgical texts.

The guided companion follows the St. Vincent novena’s six sections. The nine-day Scripture cycle follows the St. Vincent companion. Scripture, reflection, intentions and thanksgiving are companion additions; the devotional prayer text is preserved. Scripture readings use the public-domain Douay-Rheims Bible. Added community prayers and reflections are original devotional texts.

How to pray this novena

Mangidaulo iti kararag

Pray the opening prayer, the prayer for the appropriate day, and the closing prayer on each of nine days. Name your intention in silence. These original devotional prayers may be prayed individually or together.

Opening prayer

Amin

God of mercy, gather us in your presence as we begin this novena. We bring you our intention, our gratitude, and the needs of those who cannot find words to pray. Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Open our hearts to welcoming Christ with prayer and generous hospitality. Help us to receive your answer with trust and to put our faith into action. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Day 1 · Longing
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Awaken our desire for your presence beneath the noise and hurry of preparation. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Help us make room for silence and for a person who needs attention. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 2 · Hope
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Remember those for whom this season brings loneliness, grief, or anxiety rather than celebration. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Teach us to include them gently without demanding that they feel cheerful. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 3 · Mary's yes
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Help us learn from Mary's willingness to receive God's call with faith. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Give us courage to accept one responsibility of love that we have postponed. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 4 · Joseph's care
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Bless parents, guardians, and workers who quietly provide for the needs of others. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Help us share the labour of preparation fairly and express sincere gratitude. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 5 · A place to stay
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Remember families without safe shelter and travellers separated from home or loved ones. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Move us to offer welcome and support practical efforts to provide security. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 6 · The humble manger
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Free us from measuring Christmas by spending, display, or the approval of other people. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Teach us to choose simplicity and share something meaningful with those in need. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 7 · Good news
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Bring joy to those who need to hear that they are loved and not forgotten. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Help us speak a word of hope supported by concrete kindness. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 8 · Peace on earth
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Enter communities troubled by conflict and homes burdened by unresolved resentment. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Guide us toward an honest gesture of peace, with wisdom and proper boundaries. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Day 9 · Welcome Christ
Amin

Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, come into our hearts. Receive our gratitude for your coming and our desire to follow you beyond this season. We place before God the intention we carry through these nine days, remembering also those whose burdens are hidden from us. Help us carry your welcome into the ordinary days that follow Christmas. Give us patience when answers come slowly and courage to follow Christ in the ordinary duties of today. May our prayer bear fruit in faithful love. Amen.

Closing prayer

Amin

Heavenly Father, receive the prayers we have offered today. Let welcoming Christ with prayer and generous hospitality take root in our daily choices. Give help to those in distress, wisdom to those who care for them, and hope to those who feel forgotten. We entrust our intention to your loving providence without demanding a particular outcome. Keep us faithful to Jesus and generous toward our neighbour. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mangidaulo iti kararag

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Amin

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Mangidaulo iti kararag

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Amin

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Some prayer texts are obtained from existing Catholic websites and devotional sources. While these sources are selected with care, not all translations have documented ecclesiastical approval or have undergone independent theological and linguistic verification.

Some translations may therefore contain unintentional differences, variations in wording, or inaccuracies.

Our translation verification and improvement process is ongoing. We welcome corrections and suggestions from clergy, Catholic scholars, and knowledgeable native speakers.

The inclusion of a prayer does not imply official approval by the Catholic Church unless such approval is expressly identified and verified.
