About this novena

A novena is a devotion prayed over nine days. This companion draws its themes from the Vincentian Congregation’s Novena to St. Vincent de Paul, reflecting on faith, love, simplicity, humility and service. Its community prayers are original adaptations. Pray one day at a time and let each day’s intention become a small act of charity.

The guided companion follows the St. Vincent novena’s six sections. Scripture readings use the public-domain Douay-Rheims Bible. Added community prayers and reflections are original devotional texts.

Pray one daily prayer over nine days. The guided companion includes opening prayers, complete Scripture readings, intentions, the Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Visit and closing prayers.

Day 1 · Faith
Amin

Jesus, we bring you both our belief and our uncertainty. Sit with us in the questions we cannot resolve. When the next step seems hidden, help us take it with you. Through the intercession of Saint Vincent, let our faith become visible in patient care for another person. Make our ordinary choices a quiet yes to your presence. Amen.

Reach out to someone who is worried. Offer your presence before offering advice.

Day 2 · Love of God
Amin

Father, before we speak, you already welcome us. Teach us to receive your love without feeling that we must earn it. Let gratitude grow in the places where we have become distracted or discouraged. With Saint Vincent beside us in prayer, help us return to you throughout this day and recognise every good gift as an invitation to love. Amen.

Pause three times today to thank God for one particular gift.

Day 3 · Love for Neighbour
Amin

Lord Jesus, interrupt our indifference. Open our attention to the person whose needs we have hurried past. Give us the courage to approach with respect, the patience to listen, and the generosity to help without seeking praise. Through Saint Vincent’s intercession, teach us a charity that protects dignity and makes room at the table. Amen.

Offer practical help to a neighbour, colleague, or family member.

Day 4 · Simplicity
Amin

God of truth, untangle our hearts. Free us from pretending to be stronger, wiser, or better than we are. Give us words that are honest and kind, and intentions that do not need applause. With the help of Saint Vincent’s prayers, teach us to live simply enough to notice your presence and another person’s need. Amen.

Do one good thing quietly, without mentioning it to anyone.

Day 5 · Humility
Amin

Jesus, you knelt to serve. Help us release the need to come first or have the final word. Make us willing to receive help and to recognise the gifts of others. Through Saint Vincent’s intercession, give us the freedom to serve in small, hidden ways, trusting that we are already loved by you. Amen.

Thank someone whose work often goes unnoticed.

Day 6 · Meekness
Amin

Gentle Jesus, meet us before anger becomes a careless word. Give us space to breathe and wisdom to respond. Heal the hurt that makes us harsh. Through Saint Vincent’s prayers, help us practise a gentleness that tells the truth, respects healthy boundaries, and refuses to humiliate another person. Amen.

In a difficult conversation, pause and listen fully before responding.

Day 7 · Mortification
Amin

Lord, teach us the freedom of choosing what matters. Help us loosen our grip on habits that consume our attention. Let a small, sensible sacrifice make us more available to you and to others. Through Saint Vincent’s intercession, shape our self-denial into joyful generosity, never contempt for the body and life you have given us. Amen.

Set aside a little screen time and give that attention to prayer or someone who needs you.

Day 8 · Zeal for the Souls
Amin

Jesus, kindle a steady love in us. When we grow weary of doing good, renew our hope. Send us to serve with patience, humility, and respect for each person’s freedom. Through Saint Vincent’s intercession, let our words and actions point toward your mercy. Keep our enthusiasm rooted in prayer and faithful care. Amen.

Encourage someone in their faith or quietly pray for a person who feels far from God.

Day 9 · Prayer
Amin

God who hears us, here we are. Receive the gratitude, grief, and hope that we carry. Teach us to listen as well as speak, and to remain with you when prayer feels silent. Thank you for these days with Saint Vincent. May this novena continue in a life more attentive to your voice and more generous in love. Amen.

Choose a small daily time for prayer, and one act of service to continue after this novena.
